Moorend Common is an SSSI of about 23 ha, managed by Lane End Parish Council and Natural England. It provides a unique habitat for flora and fauna in the Chilterns, because of the local geology. The Chiltern chalk is still topped with London clay and Reading clay, giving a permanently wet area of acid grassland. For many decades the tree and shrub cover has encroached on the grassland, but a 10 year management plan has been initiated to reclaim as much grassland as possible. One of the management aims is to make the Common more accessible in all weathers to allow educational visits.
The Green Gym task is to make the public footpaths passable in all weathers, by using materials generated on-site from the tree and scrub clearance work. In addition there will be some boardwalks installed to provide crossing places for the areas which are underwater in the wet seasons.
