Hernes Estate

We are currently not working on this site

Situated just outside Henley (SU748827), this valuable chalk downland site on a private estate is being restored under a country stewardship scheme. The reduction of grazing animals has allowed blackthorn and hawthorn scrub to invade the flower-rich grassland, where pyramidal orchids were once a common sight. A public footpath running through the centre of the estate allows people to see the results of the scheme as it progresses.

Group of volunteers

One of SCGG’s tasks is to clear back the scrub, visiting only in the autumn and winter to avoid the nesting season. We have completed work in three field areas, where scrub re-growth is discouraged by the re-introduction of sheep or cattle. Our current project is laying a hedge along Pack and Prime Lane, an ancient bridleway which runs through Hernes.
