This old beech wood on the Hernes estate opposite the church in Rotherfield Greys is on a steep slope with a public footpath running through. It used to be full of bluebells but many decades of holly growth have made the woodland floor too dark for them to grow. Sonning Common Green Gym has started a project in 2014 to remove most of the holly, burning the cut material where possible in a fire trailer. After clearing the holly in similar woods we have seen the gradual reappearance of bluebells and other woodland flowers, so we have every hope that the same will happen in Parson’s Wood.
