This Chiltern Hills nature reserve with spectacular views contains mixed woodland, yew forest and, most importantly, chalk grassland which supports a rich diversity of wild flowers, mosses, butterflies and other invertebrates.
Sonning Common Green Gym’s main project during 2007 is to clear an old sunken trackway of invasive yew and the scrub which it has spawned on the southern bank. The scrub is choking out the grassland habitat, which is also being trodden away by the public footpath which can no longer use the impassable sunken track.
For at least two hundred years, possibly back to medieval times, the track has been used by drovers and pedestrians as a link from the farms in the valley and Christmas Commons, falling into disuse about the middle of the last century.
The main meeting point is in the NT car park at the top of the Reserve.
